The Injury Hub: Shin Splints
What are shin splints?
Shin splints refer to pain along the inner edge of the shinbone (tibia) due to inflammation of muscles, tendons, and bone tissue.
Common in runners and athletes, they typically result from overuse, improper footwear, or sudden increases in exercise intensity. Symptoms include aching, tenderness, and swelling along the lower leg.

Symptoms Of Shin Splints
Symptoms of shin splints include a dull, aching pain along the inner edge of the shinbone (tibia) that often worsens with physical activity. The pain may initially appear during or after exercise but can become constant over time. Other symptoms include tenderness and swelling along the lower leg, especially on the inner side. In some cases, the area may feel warm to the touch.
Pain often increases when touching or pressing on the shin and may decrease with rest but can quickly return with resumed activity. Persistent symptoms may indicate more serious issues, like stress fractures, needing medical attention.
Treatment With Physiotherapy
A physiotherapist treats shin splints by addressing pain, reducing inflammation, and correcting underlying issues. Treatment may include rest, ice, and gentle massage to relieve pain and swelling, along with stretching and strengthening exercises for the calves and lower legs to improve flexibility and stability.
They may also guide gradual return-to-activity plans to prevent re-injury and recommend supportive footwear or orthotics for better alignment. Taping techniques and gait assessment can further correct movement patterns that contribute to shin splints.
