Shin Splint Treatment

Effective Shin Splint Treatment From Our Expert Podiatrists.

Shin splints are a common sports injury where pain is felt along the shin bone (tibia). They are caused by high impact exercise such as running, jogging and dancing on hard surfaces, weak muscles and bad foot wear. People with flat feet are also more prone to shin splints because the flatness of their feet means the muscles and tendons around the shin are overloaded which leads to pain in that area.

Common Shin Splints Symptoms

Common conditions associated with shin splints include:

  1. Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome (MTSS): Pain along the inner edge of the shinbone (tibia) due to inflammation of muscles, tendons, and bone tissue.
  2. Stress Fractures: Small cracks in the shinbone caused by repetitive stress, often presenting with localised pain that worsens with activity.
  3. Compartment Syndrome: Increased pressure within the muscle compartments of the lower leg, leading to pain, swelling, and potentially nerve damage.
  4. Tendinitis: Inflammation of the tendons around the shin, often affecting the anterior tibialis tendon.
  5. Flat Feet or Overpronation: Abnormal foot mechanics can contribute to shin splints, causing added stress on the shin area.

Once you have completed your exercises and stretches to help loosen the muscles and relieve the pain in your shins, our Podiatrists may also fit you for orthotics (either custom or off the shelf depending on the results of your gait analysis) to help realign your feet and give support to the arch. This will reduce the pressure to your shin area and consequently reduce the pain of shin splints.

If you are suffering from shin splints do not try to continue with high impact exercise and ‘run through the pain’ as you will end up doing yourself more damage. Resting is the key to getting rid of shin splints.

Our Podiatrist can teach you exercises and stretches to help loosen the muscles and relieve the pain in your shins.

Our Podiatrists have extensive experience in the treatment of a range of sports related injuries and may provide strengthening exercises to ensure long lasting relief.

Using Spectrum Foot Clinics was the best move I ever made regarding having my husbands feet being seen to, he's had diabetes for about nine years and found it difficult to find a suitable chiropodist (as was suggested by his diabetic nurse). I found your Clinic by searching on Google.I phoned in the morning, and made an appointment for that same afternoon, which pleasantly surprised me. The attention and professionalism we received by the podiatrist Saoirse Waldron, was warm, welcoming and reassuring. To anyone who suffers with foot problems, I would highly recommend a visit to your Clinic. I had my own feet seen to on the same day and what a difference it made!!!

Great place. I turned up on time for my appointment and was seen straight away. If only more places were like this. Chiropodist did the examination and assured me nothing much was wrong, this is what I wanted to hear. Very reassured and happy with the service.
