Shin splints are a common sports injury where pain is felt along the shin bone (tibia). They are caused by high impact exercise such as running, jogging and dancing on hard surfaces, weak muscles and bad foot wear. People with flat feet are also more prone to shin splints because the flatness of their feet means the muscles and tendons around the shin are overloaded which leads to pain in that area.
Struggling with Shin Splints? Our nationwide clinics offer expert treatment to relieve pain and enhance recovery. Don’t let discomfort hold you back—book your appointment today and start your journey to healing.
Common conditions associated with shin splints include:
Once you have completed your exercises and stretches to help loosen the muscles and relieve the pain in your shins, our Podiatrists may also fit you for orthotics (either custom or off the shelf depending on the results of your gait analysis) to help realign your feet and give support to the arch. This will reduce the pressure to your shin area and consequently reduce the pain of shin splints.
If you are suffering from shin splints do not try to continue with high impact exercise and ‘run through the pain’ as you will end up doing yourself more damage. Resting is the key to getting rid of shin splints.
Our Podiatrist can teach you exercises and stretches to help loosen the muscles and relieve the pain in your shins.
Our Podiatrists have extensive experience in the treatment of a range of sports related injuries and may provide strengthening exercises to ensure long lasting relief.
