What Are Custom Fit And Long Lasting Orthotics?

You may have heard the terms insoles and orthotics before and wondered what the difference is. Essentially, insoles are prefabricated temporary devices that can usually be bought off the shelf, and are worn in your shoes, usually for comfort.

Our orthotics, or orthoses, are medically prescribed custom devices that are designed specifically for you to help improve the mechanics and function of your feet, and are made from high quality, long lasting material.

The Orthotics Journey

What Happens During An Orthotics Appointment?

Firstly, it is important to know that not everyone needs custom orthotics! Therefore, your podiatrist or chartered physiotherapist will first carry out a full biomechanics assessment to determine your needs and the best course of action for you individually.

If your podiatrist thinks you would benefit from a custom orthotic insole, you can expect to go through 4 stages.

Your podiatrist or chartered physiotherapist will perform:

  • Full biomechanical assessment of your lower limbs
  • Feet and ankle range of motion checks
  • Muscle and tendon strength tests
  • Gait analysis
  • Neurological assessment, if required
  • Your podiatrist or chartered physiotherapist will take a cast of your feet, using either a 3D scanner or foambox.
  • They will also draw an outline of your feet, if necessary, to mark out specific points that may need to be offloaded (e.g. a painful corn).
  • Your podiatrist or chartered physiotherapist will complete a prescription form, including the materials used and design of the device that will be fully customised to your needs.
  • Your cast/scan and prescription form will then be sent to the relevant lab for your custom orthotic insoles be manufactured.
  • Once your custom orthotic insoles arrive back into our clinic, you will receive a free fitting appointment (appoximately twenty working days).
  • In addition to this, you will also receive a review appointment after 4 weeks of wear to ensure that you are getting the maximum benefit out of your devices.
  • Orthotics for shoes are sometimes just one part of a larger rehabilitation programme for some cases. If your podiatrist or chartered physiotherapist thinks that you would benefit from a strengthening or stretching programme, they may assign you some prescribed exercises via our easy to use App, where you will receive demonstrations and instructions about each one.
  • If your podiatrist or chartered physiotherapist thinks that further physiotherapy intervention may be required, you can also be seen by our highly skilled physiotherapists, often in the same clinic you attended for your initial assessment.
How Much Does It Cost?

Your podiatrist or chartered physiotherapist will discuss with you the best orthotics option for your individual case during your initial appointment.

  • Initial assessment – €70
  • Off the shelf orthotic insoles – €85

  • Custom orthotics – €350

  • Custom premium orthotics – €450
