Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a condition of hormonal imbalance that is thought to effect about 1 in 5 women of a child bearing age.

The 3 main features of PCOS are:

  • Irregular periods

  • Excess androgen – High levels of “male” hormones in your body, which may cause physical signs such as excess facial or body hair.

  • Polycystic ovaries – Ovaries become enlarged and contain many fluid-filled sacs that surround the eggs. (Despite the name, you do not actually have cysts if you have PCOS!)

There is unfortunately no cure for PCOS, but diet and lifestyle changes can have a significant impact on the effective management PCOS symptoms including insulin resistance, weight gain, high androgens, excess hair growth and irregular periods.

How We Can Help

You should book a consultation with your GP. They will be able to refer you for tests to confirm a possible diagnosis of PCOS. Your next step will be to consult with a Dietitian as diet and lifestyle are pivotal in the management of PCOS.

Common symptoms of PCOS include:

  • Irregular periods
  • Difficulty getting pregnant (due to irregular ovulation or failure to ovulate)
  • Excessive hair growth – usually on the face, chest, back or buttocks
  • Weight gain
  • Thinning hair and hair loss from the head
  • Oily skin or acne

The first step to managing PCOS through nutrition is to assess your diet and lifestyle and find areas for improvement. Through diet modification, our dietitians can help with weight loss or maintaining a healthy weight, improving fertility, reducing the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, and improving overall energy and lifestyle.

Your dietitian will also carry out a complete nutritional assessment, taking a diet history, body composition analysis including weight, BMI, and waist circumference.

Through a consultations with a member of our team you will feel empowered to better understand PCOS and how to best manage your diet and lifestyle choices to help reduce or manage symptoms.

You will also receive:

  • Tailored advice based on your individualised requirements, symptoms and goals

  • A starter meal guide and recipe ideas tailored to you

  • A clear action plan to help you better understand PCOS

Common symptoms:

If you experience symptoms of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), they’ll usually become apparent in your late teens or early twenties. Not all women with PCOS will have all the symptoms, and each symptom can vary from mild to severe. Many women only experience menstrual problems and/or are unable to conceive.
