Corns and calluses mostly develop on the feet or toes and can be very painful to walk on, especially where they press on the nerves surrounding the skin.
A callus is a flattened area of thick, hard dead skin that has developed on the sole of the foot where there is a lot of weight and pressure exerted. A corn is a more localised and highly concentrated point of thick hard dead skin, usually located at a pressure point such as under a toe joint (known as a hard corn). Corns can also develop between the toes due to moisture and friction of one toe against the other (referred to as soft corns).
Generally hard corns are simply enucleated and the problem is resolved immediately – however, it will return. Soft corns are harder to deal with because the area needs to be treated in order to harden the skin to allow proper enucleation. Fibrous corns and neurovascular corns are much more difficult to treat as they have a lot of nerve endings and often a strong vascular supply which can make enucleating these corns very painful. Local anesthetic is sometimes necessary as is the use of caustic or cryotherapy in order to reduce the sensation in the lesion.
Our Podiatrists will get rid of your corns or calluses by removing the masses of hard skin using a combination of treatments. Once the corns and calluses have been removed they will work on the underlying problem that caused the issues in the first place so that the corns and calluses don’t reappear.
Our clinicians will assess your gait (the way you walk) to look out for any abnormalities that cause uneven pressure exertion along the foot. They may try to redistribute the weight in your foot more evenly using insoles or cushioning so that the pressure is divided more evenly along the sole and not overly exerting in one specific area.
