The Injury Hub: Fibromyalgia

What is Fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia, also known FM or FMS, is a chronic condition defined by widespread pain in the muscles, ligaments and tendons of a person along with certain pressure points across the body.

This pain may then lead to sleep difficulties, headaches, irritable bowel syndrome and muscle stiffness. It is found more commonly in women and occurs in all age groups. However, the average age of diagnosis is 35.

How We Can Help.

Symptoms, Treatment & How We Can Help Your Recovery.

Learn about common Fibromyalgia symptoms, effective treatments, and how our expert team supports your recovery journey every step of the way.

Symptoms Of Fibromyalgia

The symptoms of Fibromyalgia are difficult to diagnose due to there being many different causes.

Symptoms include:

  • Chronic Muscle Pain

  • Muscle Spasms Or Tightness

  • Insomnia

  • Waking Up Feeling Tired

  • Stiffness Or Pain Upon Waking

  • Pain From Staying In One Position For Too Long

Diagnosis is often done through a process of elimination, the number of painful sites, pain severity and the presence of symptoms for at least 3 months. Our Chartered Physiotherapists can assist in the diagnosis of this problematic condition.

The benefits of aerobic exercise are essential to sufferers of FM. Your physiotherapist will demonstrate a series of specific stretching and graded strengthening drills to incorporate into your daily life. There is no specific cure for FM so treatment is focused towards ongoing management.

Many sufferers of FM feel they benefit from periodic soft tissue techniques including soft tissue massage, dry needling and acupuncture.

Fibromyalgia can be a very difficult condition to deal with as it can have a far reaching impact on a person’s quality of life. Furthermore, this disorder can lead to a cycle in which people may take pills or alcohol to aid sleeping and then excessive caffeine to recover from fatigue.

Physiotherapy focuses on alleviating fatigue, muscle weakness, pain and sleep disturbances.

Our Physiotherapists are highly skilled and will use various evidence based techniques such as advice, manipulation and strengthening and aerobic exercise. Research has shown that a correctly prescribed exercise program can be hugely beneficial to those with Fibromyalgia, both physically and mentally.

Had a very positive experience. Had severe back pain and Dylan was able to see me at short notice. He was very thorough and clear in assessing and explaining my condition and structuring a recovery exercise program that worked very succesfully. I am now fully recovered and looking forward to being as active as I was before my injury.

Really happy with the two appointments I had with Dylan Connelly to treat my calf strain. His approach was both professional and personable and he ensured that I was completely comfortable during all phases of the appointments. He explained and demonstrated the exercises in 'lay' terms and ensured that I understood and was happy with the approach and expected outcomes. I would definitely recommend Dylan for any physio needs.

I met with Lisa on three occasions in relation to my hamstring and she was absolutely amazing! So easy to chat to and super informative. You need to book at least a week or two in advance to get a spot with her and it's no surprise. She's absolutely fantastic! He explained and demonstrated the exercises in 'lay' terms and ensured that I understood and was happy with the approach and expected outcomes. I would definitely recommend Dylan for any physio needs.

I went to Olga for 4 or 5 weeks before the marathon this year for hip pain. I was contemplating not running as my long run training had become so painful on the hip. Olga treated with dry needling and massage and over 2 sessions, I saw a big difference. I continued a weekly session to keep me loose and followed her exercise plan. I completed the marathon with no hip issues and felt like my recovery after was a lot faster than previous years.

I can only recommend Dr. Muhammed Sohail. I’ve been to many physio consultants and he’s been the very best so far: dry needling has improved my IT band issues so much over two sessions including my knee pain. I would definitely recommend Dylan for any physio needs.
