Wheat Intolerance

Food intolerances are much more common than food allergies. The symptoms of food intolerances tend to come on more slowly, often many hours after eating the problem food. Food intolerance is an adverse reaction to a food which occurs when our body has an inability to digest that food successfully. A reasonable portion of food is usually needed to cause a reaction, although some people can be sensitive to smaller amounts.

How We Can Help

Your first step is to visit your GP to rule out other possible causes of your symptoms. From there you can visit a Dietitian to help you identify the cause of and resolve your symptoms.

Symptoms to look out for:

  • Bloating
  • Tiredness/malaise
  • Aches
  • Diarrhoea
  • Constipation
  • Itchy/flaky skin
  • Rashes/hives
  • Vomiting

The symptoms of wheat intolerance might be like IBS, and you won’t necessarily suffer from all of them.

When there is uncertainty as to which foods trigger intolerance symptoms, the dietitian will help to devise an elimination diet of the suspected foods and advise on reintroducing these foods to determine which caused the symptoms. The dietitian’s role in this is crucial to ensure that the diet remains nutritionally adequate throughout the treatment.
