Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a term used to describe conditions which affect the gut, namely Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s Disease.

Both cause inflammation in the gut and can lead to symptoms such as:

  • Pain, cramps or swelling in the tummy
  • Recurring or bloody diarrhoea
  • Weight loss
  • Extreme tiredness

A person may experience all or some of these symptoms. It’s unclear what causes IBD, but a combination of factors is thought to play a part. These include:

  • Genetics – you’re more likely to develop IBD if you have a close relative with the condition
  • A problem with your immune system

People who smoke are twice as likely to get Crohn’s disease than non-smokers.

How We Can Help

If you suspect that you are at risk of either of the above, you should speak with your GP to receive a diagnosis, as many digestive disorders have similar symptoms.

Once you have a diagnosis, booking an appointment with a Dietitian will be your next step. A Dietitian can help you to optimise your diet and lifestyle to manage your condition and prevent progression of the disease.

During your initial consultation, your Dietitian will assess your symptoms, diet and lifestyle. We will identify triggers in your diet and lifestyle and equip you with the knowledge and skills to manage your condition for good.

Your Dietitian will also carry out a complete nutritional assessment, diet history, body composition analysis including weight, BMI, waist circumference, body fat %, lean body mass, waist to hip measurement and more.

You will receive:

  • A starter meal plan tailored to you
  • Recipe book to suit your dietary requirements
  • Tailored advice and action points
