Child Development Milestones: 18 Months

Continuing on with our series of blogs about the different milestones children should reach at certain stages and ages this blog covers the child development milestones for an 18 month old baby.   The different things they do and say gives us an idea of their stage of development and which child development milestone they are at. You can use the below as a general check-list to ensure that your child’s development is on track for their age.  

Looking and Listening/Hearing and Understanding

         Happy to choose their own activity
         Does not like intervention from chosen activity
         Follows simple commands e.g. ‘where’s your nose?’
         Understands mainly naming words ‘shoe’ ‘ball’
         Explores alone as long as parent is close by

Talking/communication

         Can say several single words
         Shakes head for ‘no’
         Points at desired objects
         Sounds mainly include following consonants: b, d, g, m, n, w

Size of Vocab: 10 – 20 at the 18 month child development milestone

Social/Emotional/Play

         Gives objects to others as a form of play
         Plays basic pretend – feeding a doll
         Scribbles on their own
         Knows what everyday objects are used for e.g. telephone, spoon
