The illiotibial band (IT band) is the length of tissue on the outside of the thigh that runs from the side of the pelvis across the hip and connects to the outside of the knee.

With Illiotibial band syndrome this length of tissue is tight and can become inflamed around the knee area which can be quite painful. Often people with this condition complain of shooting pains around the hip or the knee.
Once a gait analysis has been made to assess the way you walk or run has been completed the Podiatrist may prescribe orthotics (either custom or off the shelf) to correct the structure and alignment of the foot which will reduce the stress on the IT band and lessen the pain. They may also use manipulation and mobilisation techniques to loosen out the illiotibial band and show you exercises and stretches to keep the IT band loose. Our podiatrists can also advise you on your footwear and your training regime so that you avoid putting yourself in danger of developing illiotibial band syndrome again.
The treatment offered by our Podiatrist will depend on the cause of illiotibial syndrome in the first place. Once this is determined, a specific treatment plan will be outlined in order to reduce pain in the area.
