Ankle Pain Treatment

Effective Ankle Pain Treatment From Our Expert Podiatrists.

Ankle pain can be caused by a wide variety of factors and various different injuries but ankle sprain is one of the most common injuries causing ankle pain.

Ankle sprain is usually caused by the ankle rolling over on its side turning the sole of the foot inward towards the other foot, often referred to as a rolled ankle. This can happen during sport, by tripping over something or anytime really where you take an awkward step. Other common causes of ankle pain include Achilles tendonitis and Flat feet.

Symptoms of Ankle Pain

An ankle sprain stretches the ligaments on the outside of the ankle causing pain and swelling in the area. Once the injury occurs or pain/swelling develops you should follow the RICE protocol immediately while you wait to see a professional. The RICE protocol is as follows:

  • Rest your ankle and keep the weight of it when you can.
  • Ice the area to reduce swelling – make sure the ice is covered in a thick towel so it is not in direct contact with your skin.
  • Compression bandages help to support the affected ankle and also reduce the swelling.
  • Elevate the ankle when possible to keep the weight off it and the swelling down.

Our podiatrist can provide treatment to relieve the pain in the ankle and can offer advice on preventative methods in future.

All of our Podiatrists are fully qualified with vast amount of clinical experience in the treatment of ankle injuries and ankle sprains. We will provide you with pain relief treatment, advice on strengthening exercises and our Podiatrists will look at the cause of your ankle pain to ensure there is no underlying biomechanical issue which needs to be resolved.

Treatment for ankle pain and ankle sprain usually focuses on reducing the swelling and pain first and once this has subsided our Podiatrist will focus on restoring the motion, flexibility and strength to the affected ankle.

Our Podiatrist may teach you a series of strengthening exercises to improve your ankle and reduce the chance of spraining it again. They may also prescribe orthotics to put in your shoes to give some extra support to your ankle and foot.

Using Spectrum Foot Clinics was the best move I ever made regarding having my husbands feet being seen to, he's had diabetes for about nine years and found it difficult to find a suitable chiropodist (as was suggested by his diabetic nurse). I found your Clinic by searching on Google.I phoned in the morning, and made an appointment for that same afternoon, which pleasantly surprised me. The attention and professionalism we received by the podiatrist Saoirse Waldron, was warm, welcoming and reassuring. To anyone who suffers with foot problems, I would highly recommend a visit to your Clinic. I had my own feet seen to on the same day and what a difference it made!!!

Great place. I turned up on time for my appointment and was seen straight away. If only more places were like this. Chiropodist did the examination and assured me nothing much was wrong, this is what I wanted to hear. Very reassured and happy with the service.
