The Injury Hub: Whiplash
What is Whiplash?
Whiplash is a neck injury caused by a sudden, forceful back-and-forth movement, often from car accidents.
This motion strains neck muscles, ligaments, and tendons, leading to pain, stiffness, and reduced range of motion. Symptoms may also include headaches, dizziness, and shoulder pain, sometimes appearing hours or days after injury.

Symptoms Of Whiplash
Symptoms of whiplash include neck pain and stiffness, worsening with movement, and a reduced range of motion in the neck. Headaches, often starting at the base of the skull, are common, along with shoulder, upper back, and arm pain or tenderness. Other symptoms can include dizziness, fatigue, and tingling or numbness in the arms. Some people experience blurred vision, ringing in the ears, and difficulty concentrating or sleeping. Symptoms may appear immediately after injury or develop over the next 24 to 48 hours.
While many cases improve within weeks, some people may experience lingering pain and discomfort.
Treatment With Physiotherapy
A physiotherapist treats whiplash by reducing pain, restoring movement, and strengthening neck muscles. Initial treatments may include gentle neck exercises, stretching, and applying heat or ice to ease pain and stiffness.
Manual therapy, like soft tissue massage and joint mobilisation, can improve flexibility and reduce muscle tension. As recovery progresses, the physiotherapist may introduce strength-building exercises for the neck and upper back, helping to stabilise the area.
Posture correction and education on proper movement techniques are also included to prevent re-injury. Tailored treatment plans promote healing and gradually restore full neck function for long-term recovery.
